High precision measurement of the radiative capture cross section of 238U at the n_TOF CERN facility

2016

The importance of improving the accuracy on the capture cross-section of 238U has been addressed by the Nuclear Energy Agency, since its uncertainty significantly affects the uncertainties of key design parameters for both fast and thermal nuclear reactors. Within the 7th framework programme ANDES of the European Commission three different measurements have been carried out with the aim of providing the 238U(n,γ) cross-section with an accuracy which varies from 1 to 5%, depending on the energy range. Hereby the final results of the measurement performed at the n-TOF CERN facility in a wide energy range from 1 eV to 700 keV will be presented. © The Authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2017.

New constraints on the Al 25 (p,γ) reaction and its influence on the flux of cosmic γ rays from classical nova explosions

2021

The astrophysical Al25(p,γ)Si26 reaction represents one of the key remaining uncertainties in accurately modeling the abundance of radiogenic Al26 ejected from classical novae. Specifically, the strengths of key proton-unbound resonances in Si26, that govern the rate of the Al25(p,γ) reaction under explosive astrophysical conditions, remain unsettled. Here, we present a detailed spectroscopy study of the Si26 mirror nucleus Mg26. We have measured the lifetime of the 3+, 6.125-MeV state in Mg26 to be 19(3)fs and provide compelling evidence for the existence of a 1- state in the T=1,A=26 system, indicating a previously unaccounted for=1 resonance in the Al25(p,γ) reaction. Using the presently…

Radiative kaon capture on nuclei.

1990

Hypernuclear formation through the radiative capture of in-flight ${\mathit{K}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$ is studied in a distorted wave impluse approximation approach. The elementary operator is obtained from first-order Feynman diagrams and is constrained by the reactions ${\mathit{K}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{\gamma} and, via crossing, by \ensuremath{\gamma}p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathit{K}}^{+}$\ensuremath{\Lambda}. The ${\mathit{K}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$ distortion has been included via a simple optical potential which is in agreement with ${\mathit{K}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$ elastic scattering on nuclei. Using the…

Direct neutron capture for magic-shell nuclei.

1995

In neutron capture for magic--shell nuclei the direct reaction mechanism can be important and may even dominate. As an example we investigated the reaction $^{48}$Ca(n,$\gamma)^{49}$Ca for projectile energies below 250\,keV in a direct capture model using the folding procedure for optical and bound state potentials. The obtained theoretical cross sections are in agreement with the experimental data showing the dominance of the direct reaction mechanism in this case. The above method was also used to calculate the cross section for $^{50}$Ca(n,$\gamma)^{51}$Ca.

Electron capture decay of116Inand nuclear structure of doubleβdecays

1998

Quasiparticle-random-phase-approximation (QRPA) calculations of double $\ensuremath{\beta}$ decays have not been able to reproduce data in the $A=100$ system. We propose the $A=116$ system---because of its smaller deformation---as a simpler system to test QRPA calculations. We present results of two experiments we performed, which determine the electron-capture-decay branch of ${}^{116}\mathrm{In}$ to be $(2.27\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.63)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}2}%$, from which we deduce $\mathrm{log}{ft=4.39}_{\ensuremath{-}0.15}^{+0.10}$. We present QRPA calculations and compare their predictions to experimental data. Finally we use these calculations to…

Determining therp-Process Flow throughNi56: Resonances inCu57(p,γ)Zn58Identified with GRETINA

2014

An approach is presented to experimentally constrain previously unreachable (p, γ) reaction rates on nuclei far from stability in the astrophysical rp process. Energies of all critical resonances in the (57)Cu(p,γ)(58)Zn reaction are deduced by populating states in (58)Zn with a (d, n) reaction in inverse kinematics at 75 MeV/u, and detecting γ-ray-recoil coincidences with the state-of-the-art γ-ray tracking array GRETINA and the S800 spectrograph at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory. The results reduce the uncertainty in the (57)Cu(p,γ) reaction rate by several orders of magnitude. The effective lifetime of (56)Ni, an important waiting point in the rp process in x-ray burst…

Near-threshold $\pi^-$ photoproduction on the deuteron

2018

The first experimental investigation of the near-threshold cross section for incoherent $\pi^-$ photoproduction on the deuteron $\gamma$ d -> $\pi^-$ pp is presented. The experimental technique involved detection of the ~131 MeV gamma ray resulting from the radiative capture of photoproduced $\pi^-$ in the target. The total cross section has been measured using an unpolarized tagged-photon beam, a liquid-deuterium target, and three very large NaI(Tl) spectrometers. The data are compared to theoretical models that give insight into the elementary reaction $\gamma$ n -> $\pi^-$ p and pion-nucleon and nucleon-nucleon final-state interactions.
